For its efforts to reduce distracted driving among teenagers, Central Magnet School has won a first place award and two cash prizes totaling more than $10,000.

A special event is scheduled at the school on Tuesday, May 17, where students and faculty members will be presented the award. The event will begin at 10:30 a.m. with representatives from The Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, Ford Motor Co. and the Allstate Foundation. Members of the media are encouraged to attend the event.

Central participated in the "Be In the Zone, Turn Off Your Phone" (BITZ) campaign. Each year, the campaign is held from October-April. Schools are asked to participate in at least eight activities or events aimed at reducing distracted driving. Some of the activities are mandatory, such as holding a mock crash, and others are chosen by the school.

The campaign at Central Magnet was a partnership between the student council, HOSA, the Interact Club, the school resource officer, the driver's education class and theater students. At the end of the campaign, each school created an album on Shutterfly and shared the link with the BITZ campaign. A team of adult and student judges then scored and ranked each campaign.

Central Magnet placed third in the public service announcement contest winning $250 and placed first in the overall contest to win $10,000.

Fifteen schools participated in the campaign this year. Those schools were Greenbrier High School, Upperman High School, Columbia Central High School, Central Magnet School, Beech High School, East Hickman County High School, Sycamore High School, Kenwood High School, Christ Presbyterian Academy, Westmoreland High School, Watertown High School, Smith County High School, Page High School, Tullahoma High School and Creek Wood High School.
